WALKERS, CYCLISTS & BIKERS

Get here under your own steam.

Northborough is flat, quiet and criss-crossed with footpaths, lanes and cycle routes, and the pub sits in the middle of it with a big garden and free parking out front. Whether you arrive on foot, on two wheels or on a motorbike, you are welcome, and lunch can be ready when you are.

Why not come by bus? There is a frequent service from Peterborough to Bourne.

WALKING GROUPS

Pre-order lunch, then go and earn it.

Ring ahead with your numbers and roughly when you expect to finish, and we will have food ready as you walk in. For bigger groups we can take orders in advance so nobody is waiting on a hungry return.

Boots, poles and wet dogs are fine. Leads stay on while you are on the premises.

ON THE MAP

Market Deeping Town Council's Walk 6 comes down Lincoln Road past the pub and the Manor, crosses the Maxey Cut at Nine Bridges and returns by Church Street. The village is on OS Explorer 235 and Landranger 142.

WALKS FROM THE DOOR

Flat, open and mostly dry underfoot.

Walk 6: Northborough

8.8 km / 5.5 miles

About 2½ hours

Market Deeping Town Council's circular walk comes straight down Lincoln Road past our door.

Starts at Market Deeping Town Hall, follows the old Lincoln Road into Northborough past The Pack Horse and the Manor, crosses the Maxey Cut at Nine Bridges, then comes back along Paradise Lane and Pasture Lane (the line of the Roman Car Dyke) and Church Street. Level, mostly paved with some field tracks; may be muddy with some stiles. There may be livestock, so keep dogs under close control. A shorter version turns down Church Street.

Follows the Welland and the Maxey Cut between Maxey and Market Deeping with wide views over the fields. Flat all the way, so a good one for a long lunch afterwards.

John Clare Countryside trails

Various

The Hereward Way, Nene Way and Torpel Way all cross the countryside between Peterborough and Stamford.

Three waymarked long-distance paths run through the villages John Clare wrote about, including Helpston and Glinton. Clare's own cottage on Church Street is a few minutes' walk from the pub, and his birthplace at Helpston is three miles away. OS Explorer 235 covers the lot.

CYCLISTS

Two routes pass close by.

The Peterborough Green Wheel comes through Glinton and Etton, a few minutes' ride away, and National Cycle Route 63 threads between Stamford and Peterborough through the John Clare Countryside. Either way you are only a short detour from the door, and there is free parking out front.

Peterborough Green Wheel

80 km / 50-mile network

The city's ring of cycleways passes through Glinton and Etton, a few minutes' ride from the pub.

A mix of traffic-free paths and quiet lanes around Peterborough, with the countryside section to the west of the city on quiet lanes. The northern arc runs through Werrington, Glinton, Marholm and Etton.

National Cycle Route 63

Stamford to Peterborough section

The Sustrans route threads between Stamford and Peterborough through the John Clare Countryside.

Route 63 runs from Oakham in the west to Wisbech in the east, passing Castor Hanglands nature reserve and Ferry Meadows near Peterborough. The Sustrans Fens Cycle Map (sheet 20) shows it alongside the Green Wheel.

BIKERS

Motorbikes welcome too.

Free parking out front, a stone-built pub with a real fire at the end of the ride, and a menu that is cooked to order. If a club is coming through, ring ahead with numbers so the kitchen is ready for you. We are planning a biker event for spring 2027, so watch this space.
